Indications
Xylab IV is used to treat a variety of infections, including: Lower respiratory tract infections, Acute Bacterial Otitis Media (ear infections), Skin infections, Urinary tract infections, Gonorrhea, Blood infections, Bone and joint infections, Meningitis, Prevention of infections after surgery, and Perioperative infection prevention.
Pharmacology
Xylab IV is a third-generation broad-spectrum antibiotic that fights bacteria. Xylab IV works by stopping bacteria from building their cell walls, which causes them to die. Xylab IV is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Unlike other antibiotics, Xylab IV is very stable and remains active for a long time in the body, making Xylab IV suitable for once-daily doses. The drug is not broken down in the body; most of Xylab IV is passed out in the urine, with the rest in the bile. Xylab IV is highly bound to proteins in the blood (95%).
Dosage & Administration
Adults: The usual dose is 1 to 2 grams injected into a vein or muscle once a day (or in two equal doses twice a day). For severe cases, the dose can be increased to 4 grams per day. For uncomplicated gonorrhea, 250 mg is given in a single injection. For surgery, a dose of 1 gram should be given 30 to 120 minutes before the operation.
Children (1 month and older): The usual dose is 50 to 75 mg per kilogram of body weight, injected into a vein or muscle once a day (or in two equal doses twice a day). For severe infections, up to 2 grams per day may be used, and for meningitis, up to 4 grams per day may be required.
The treatment should continue for 2 days after the infection symptoms go away. The usual treatment duration is 4 to 14 days, but longer treatment may be needed for more serious infections.
Interaction
No drug interactions have been reported.
Contraindications
Xylab IV is not suitable for patients who are allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics.
Side Effects
Xylab IV is generally well tolerated. Some possible side effects include: stomach upset (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting), mouth inflammation, skin rashes, itching, swelling, fever, blood count changes (such as low white blood cells or platelets), liver problems (such as elevated liver enzymes), and nervous system issues (such as confusion or dizziness). Rarely, veins may become irritated after an injection, but this can be minimized by injecting slowly over a few minutes.
Pregnancy & Lactation
The safety of this drug during pregnancy is not established. Xylab IV should only be used in pregnancy if necessary. Xylab IV is present in small amounts in breast milk, so caution should be taken when giving Xylab IV to nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
As with other antibiotics, there is a risk of severe allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock, which requires immediate treatment. In rare cases, signs of gallbladder issues have been seen, but this condition usually goes away after stopping the drug. Xylab IV is recommended to monitor blood tests regularly during long-term treatment.
Overdose Effects
There is no specific antidote for overdose. Treatment is supportive and based on symptoms.
