Indications

Xynovir is used with other medications to treat HIV-1 infection. Xynovir is also used to treat chronic hepatitis B in adults.

Pharmacology

Xynovir works by blocking the activity of HIV reverse transcriptase. This enzyme helps HIV to copy its genetic material, and by interfering with this process, Xynovir prevents the virus from spreading in the body.

Xynovir is a water-soluble form of the active ingredient Tenofovir. When taken, Xynovir reaches its highest concentration in the blood after 1 to 10.4 hours. Xynovir has low protein binding and a half-life of about 17 hours. Xynovir is mainly cleared from the body through the kidneys.

Dosage & Administration

The dose and frequency should be adjusted according to the patient’s needs. Xynovir is generally taken once a day, with or without food.

For adults: The recommended dose for treating HIV-1 or chronic hepatitis B is one 245 mg tablet daily, regardless of food.

For children (12 years or older, weighing at least 35 kg): The recommended dose is also one 245 mg tablet daily, without regard to food.

Interaction

Didanosine: Use with caution. Patients taking both should be monitored closely for side effects.

Atazanavir: Monitor for possible side effects of Tenofovir when used with Atazanavir.

Lopinavir, Ritonavir: Patients should be closely monitored for side effects of Tenofovir when used with these medications.

Contraindications

Xynovir should not be used if you have bone issues, severe liver or kidney disease, low phosphate levels in your blood, or high blood acidity. Xynovir is also not recommended for breastfeeding mothers.

Side Effects

Common side effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea, and weakness. Some people may also experience indigestion, chest pain, or drowsiness. Serious side effects like high cholesterol, kidney problems, depression, or anxiety should be reported to a healthcare provider immediately.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Xynovir is in pregnancy category B. There is not enough research in pregnant women, so Xynovir should only be used if absolutely necessary. HIV-positive mothers are advised not to breastfeed to avoid spreading the virus to their babies.

Precautions & Warnings

Xynovir can cause serious liver and kidney problems, including a condition called lactic acidosis. People who stop treatment may experience a worsening of hepatitis. Xynovir should not be used with certain other medications, like adefovir disoproxil. Patients with both HIV-1 and hepatitis B need to be monitored closely when using this medication.

Overdose Effects

No specific overdose effects are listed.

Therapeutic Class

Xynovir belongs to the class of drugs used for treating HIV and hepatitis B infections.

Storage Conditions

Store Xynovir in a cool, dry place, away from light. Keep Xynovir out of reach of children. Do not store above 25°C.
