Form: Tablet

Strength: 1mg

Generic Name: Ketotifen

Company: Popular Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

MRP:৳ 1.5   (Tablet)

Is Antibiotic: No

Indications

Zadit is used to prevent asthma attacks, treat symptoms of allergic conditions like rhinitis and conjunctivitis, and ease the complications of itching, pain, and tenderness linked to neurofibroma. Zadit is also used for treating allergies such as hay fever and hives.

Pharmacology

Zadit has anti-allergic properties and works similarly to sodium chromoglycate in preventing asthma. Zadit also acts as an antihistamine and is effective in preventing asthma attacks. Zadit helps reduce histamine reactions, which are crucial in preventing allergic responses. Studies in asthma patients have shown that Zadit is as effective taken orally as mast cell stabilizers used by inhalation. Its effectiveness has been proven in long-term trials, reducing the number, severity, and duration of asthma attacks. In some cases, patients experienced no further attacks. Zadit also allowed for reducing the use of corticosteroids and bronchodilators. Full benefits may take several weeks to show. Zadit will not stop asthma attacks that are already happening.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: Take 1 mg twice a day with food. In severe cases, the dose may be increased to 2 mg twice daily.

Children (over 3 years): 1 mg twice daily with food. Children who are more sensitive to sedatives should start with 0.5 to 1 mg at night for the first few days or as directed by the doctor.

Elderly: Same as the adult dose, or as recommended by the doctor.

Interaction

Zadit can enhance the effects of sedatives, sleeping pills, antihistamines, and alcohol. Some patients who took Zadit with oral diabetes medication had a temporary drop in their platelet count. This combination should be avoided.

Contraindications

Zadit should not be taken with oral diabetes medication due to the risk of lowering platelet count. Although there is no evidence of harm to the baby, Zadit is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Side Effects

Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, and slight dizziness at the beginning of treatment, which usually go away on their own after a few days.

Pregnancy & Lactation

There is no evidence that Zadit harms the baby, but Zadit is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Zadit is important to continue previous treatments for at least two weeks after starting Zadit, especially for patients using corticosteroids or ACTH. If an infection occurs, specific antibiotics should be used alongside this treatment. During the first day of treatment, Zadit may affect reactions, so patients should avoid driving or operating machinery until they know how Zadit affects them. Alcoholic drinks should be avoided. Zadit can increase the effects of sedatives, sleeping pills, antihistamines, and alcohol.

Overdose Effects

Symptoms of overdose include confusion, drowsiness, headache, slow heart rate, and breathing problems. If overdosed, Zadit is recommended to use gastric lavage or induce vomiting. General supportive treatment should also be provided.

Therapeutic Class

Zadit belongs to the class of cromoglycate and related drugs.

Storage Conditions

Store in a cool, dry place, away from light. Keep out of the reach of children.
