Zeffix
Form: Tablet
Strength: 100mg
Generic Name: Lamivudine
Company: GlaxoSmithKline
MRP:৳ 0.0 (Tablet)
Is Antibiotic: No
Indications
Zeffix is indicated for treating chronic hepatitis B, especially when there is evidence of hepatitis B virus replication and active liver inflammation.
Pharmacology
Zeffix is a synthetic nucleoside analogue. Once inside the body, Zeffix is converted into lamivudine triphosphate. This form gets incorporated into viral DNA by hepatitis B virus (HBV) polymerase, which stops the DNA chain from growing. Zeffix also weakly inhibits the activity of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase and some mammalian DNA polymerases.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: The recommended dose for treating chronic hepatitis B is 100 mg once a day.
Interaction
Taking trimethoprim (160 mg) and sulfamethoxazole (800 mg) once daily can increase the levels of lamivudine in the body. The effect of higher doses of these medicines on lamivudine hasn’t been studied.
Contraindications
Zeffix is contraindicated in people who are allergic to any of its ingredients.
Side Effects
Serious side effects include lactic acidosis, liver enlargement with fat buildup, and worsened hepatitis B after treatment. Other common side effects include tiredness, fever, sore throat, stomach upset, pain, diarrhea, muscle and joint pain, headache, and skin rashes.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There have been no adequate studies in pregnant women. Zeffix should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Zeffix is not known if Zeffix passes into breast milk, but Zeffix could potentially harm nursing infants, so mothers taking Zeffix should not breastfeed.
Precautions & Warnings
Patients should be carefully monitored by a doctor experienced in managing chronic hepatitis B before and during treatment.
Overdose Effects
There have been no reports of overdose effects.
Therapeutic Class
Zeffix is used for treating hepatic viral infections, particularly hepatitis B.
