Indications
Zenaf is used to treat infections caused by bacteria that are sensitive to Zenaf. These include:
- Upper respiratory infections like sinusitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis, and ear infections.
- Lower respiratory infections like bronchitis and pneumonia.
- Urinary tract infections such as cystitis and pyelonephritis.
- Skin and soft tissue infections like abscesses and cellulitis.
The bacteria that are sensitive to Zenaf include various types of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, E. coli, and others. Even some bacteria that are resistant to other antibiotics may still be treated by Zenaf.
Pharmacology
Zenaf is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that works against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Zenaf attacks the bacterial cell wall, causing the bacteria to break apart and die. Zenaf is effective even against bacteria that produce certain enzymes that usually make other antibiotics ineffective.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: For urinary tract infections, take 500mg four times a day or 1g twice a day. For respiratory and skin infections, take 250mg to 500mg four times a day or 500mg to 1g twice a day, depending on the infection’s severity.
Children: The usual dose is 25-50mg/kg per day, divided into two or four doses.
Maximum dose: 4g per day.
Elderly: Standard adult doses are usually appropriate, but patients with kidney or liver issues should be monitored.
Injectable form: Adults usually take 2-4g per day in divided doses. For serious infections, the dose can go up to 8g per day. For children, the dose is 50-100mg/kg per day in divided doses.
Interaction
Taking Zenaf with drugs that harm the kidneys, like certain diuretics and antibiotics, may increase the risk of kidney problems. Use caution with other medications that affect kidney function.
Contraindications
Zenaf should not be used by individuals who are allergic to cephalosporins.
Side Effects
Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and allergic reactions like skin rashes or joint pain. Rare side effects include dizziness, headache, liver problems, and changes in blood counts. If any of these occur, contact a doctor immediately.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Zenaf should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. Zenaf passes into breast milk, so caution is advised when using Zenaf while breastfeeding. Zenaf may also cause dizziness, so avoid operating heavy machinery or driving.
Precautions & Warnings
Long-term use may cause new infections. Zenaf should be used with caution in patients who are allergic to penicillin. Zenaf may cause false results in some urine tests and Coombs’ test. People with kidney problems may need a dose adjustment.
Overdose Effects
Overdose symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach issues. Treatment involves supportive care and, if necessary, stomach washing if a large amount was taken.

Storage Conditions
Keep Zenaf at room temperature away from light and moisture. Once mixed into a suspension, use Zenaf within 7 days if kept at room temperature or within 14 days if stored in the refrigerator. Do not use after the expiry date. Keep out of reach of children.
