Indications

Zenilon is used to treat various conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, severe allergic reactions, asthma, and skin diseases. Zenilon is also prescribed for disorders related to the blood, eyes, and glands like the adrenal glands.

Pharmacology

Zenilon is a synthetic steroid that mainly reduces inflammation. Zenilon works by stopping certain enzymes in the body from causing inflammation. Prednisolone is absorbed quickly by the body and binds to proteins in the blood. Zenilon is processed in the liver and removed from the body through urine.

Dosage & Administration

Adult: For conditions like nephrotic syndrome, the starting dose is 2 mg/kg/day (max 80 mg/day) divided into 3–4 doses. After 28 days, reduce the dose. For inflammation, the dose varies from 5 to 60 mg per day.

Pediatric: For asthma, children aged 1–12 years are given 10–40 mg every 12 hours, depending on age. For other conditions, doses are usually between 0.05 to 2 mg/kg per day.

Interaction

Zenilon may interact with drugs like barbiturates, rifampin, and antacids. Zenilon can also lower potassium levels, which may cause heart issues if combined with other heart medications.

Contraindications

Zenilon should not be used in patients with active infections or known hypersensitivity to its ingredients. Zenilon is also contraindicated in cases of eye herpes infection due to risk of complications.

Side Effects

Common side effects include increased appetite, indigestion, and nervousness. Less common side effects may include dizziness, skin color changes, sweating, and feeling lightheaded.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Zenilon is not recommended during pregnancy unless necessary. Zenilon can pass into breast milk and may affect the baby, so caution is advised when using Zenilon while breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Zenilon should be used with care in people with conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis. Long-term use can lead to weight gain, increased blood sugar, muscle weakness, and other health issues.

Overdose Effects

Overdose effects typically occur with long-term high doses. Treatment is mainly supportive, and doses should be reduced gradually under medical supervision.
