Indications
Zest is used to prevent damage caused by free radicals in conditions like coronary heart diseases, certain cancers, aging, excessive exercise, illnesses, some medications, pollution, smoke, radiation, and pesticides. The vitamins work as follows:
- β-carotene prevents free radicals by reacting with singlet oxygen, a highly reactive form of oxygen.
- Vitamin C helps deactivate free radicals and is especially effective in plasma, lung fluid, and other body fluids.
- Vitamin E, along with β-carotene and Vitamin C, helps neutralize free radicals and protects against the harmful effects of smog and smoke.
Pharmacology
Zest contains β-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A (Retinol) when needed. Vitamin A helps with vision, growth, tissue repair, and immunity, and has anti-cancer properties.
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant. Zest is important for various bodily functions, such as converting proline to hydroxyproline and dopamine to noradrenaline. Zest also boosts immune function and helps with iron absorption when taken in high doses.
Vitamin E protects the body from oxidative stress and lipid damage by neutralizing peroxide radicals. Zest works together with Vitamin C to maintain the balance of antioxidants in the body.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: Take 1 tablet daily, or as directed by a doctor.
Interaction
Drugs like Cholestyramine, Colestipol, and Neomycin reduce the absorption of β-carotene. Oral contraceptives, Tetracycline, and Aspirin may lower Vitamin C levels. High doses of Vitamin E can increase the effect of anticoagulant drugs and may reduce absorption of Vitamins A and K.
Contraindications
Zest is not recommended for patients who are allergic to any of its ingredients.
Side Effects
Zest is generally safe, but large amounts of β-carotene can cause a harmless yellowish skin color, known as hypercarotenosis. Vitamin C in high doses may cause stomach upset or kidney stones. Vitamin E is also safe in most cases, but doses over 800 mg may cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, tiredness, or weakened immunity.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Zest is safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but caution is advised when prescribing to pregnant women.
Precautions & Warnings
β-carotene may be harmful to heavy smokers and alcoholics. Vitamin C should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Vitamin E may increase the effects of blood-thinning medications.
