Indications

Zipradon is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults, acute treatment of manic or mixed episodes in bipolar I disorder, and maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder when combined with lithium or valproate in adults.

Pharmacology

Zipradon works by blocking certain receptors in the brain, including dopamine and serotonin receptors. This helps reduce symptoms in conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Zipradon also has a mild effect on norepinephrine and serotonin reuptake.

Dosage & Administration

Schizophrenia: Start with 20 mg twice daily. The dose may be increased up to 80 mg twice daily. The lowest effective dose should be used.

Manic/Mixed Episodes (Bipolar I): Start with 40 mg twice daily, increasing to 60 mg or 80 mg as needed.

Maintenance (Bipolar I): Continue the same dose the patient was stabilized on, between 40–80 mg twice daily.

Intramuscular for Agitation: 10 mg to 20 mg every 2 to 4 hours, up to a maximum of 40 mg per day.

Interaction

Zipradon should not be used with other medications that can prolong the QT interval. Its absorption increases when taken with food.

Contraindications

Zipradon is contraindicated in patients with known QT prolongation, recent heart attack, uncompensated heart failure, or hypersensitivity to ziprasidone.

Side Effects

Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, and headache. Other side effects can include weight gain, changes in blood sugar, and movement issues like tremors or muscle stiffness.

Zipradon is advised to consult a doctor before using Zipradon during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

Zipradon should be used cautiously in patients with heart problems, high blood pressure, or a history of seizures. There may be a higher risk of serious side effects in elderly patients with dementia.
