Indications

Zoana is used to treat diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium parvum, Giardia lamblia, and Entamoeba histolytica.

Pharmacology

Zoana is a synthetic drug taken by mouth to fight protozoal infections. Zoana works by blocking an important enzyme called Pyruvate Ferredoxin Oxido Reductase (PFOR), which is needed for the energy production of the protozoa. This stops the growth of the protozoa that cause infections like Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia.

Dosage & Administration

Age 1-3 years: 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of suspension every 12 hours for 3 days.

Age 4-11 years: 2 teaspoons (10 ml) of suspension every 12 hours for 3 days.

Age 12 years or older: 5 teaspoons (25 ml) of suspension or 1 tablet every 12 hours for 3 days.

Zoana is recommended to take this with food.

Interaction

Zoana is highly attached to plasma proteins. Therefore, caution should be taken when using Zoana with other drugs that also bind strongly to plasma proteins, especially those with a narrow therapeutic range.

Contraindications

Zoana is not recommended for patients who are allergic to Nitazoxanide or any of its ingredients.

Side Effects

Common side effects include mild stomach pain, vomiting, and headache. Rare side effects may include nausea, loss of appetite, gas, increased hunger, enlarged salivary glands, higher creatinine or liver enzyme levels, itchy skin, stuffy nose, sweating, dizziness, and discolored urine.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Zoana is categorized as pregnancy category B by the FDA. However, there are no well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Animal studies do not always predict how Zoana will affect humans, so Zoana should only be used during pregnancy if necessary.
