Indications

Zofra is used to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, surgery, or radiotherapy. Zofra also helps to treat nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy or surgery.

Pharmacology

Zofra is a strong and selective medicine that blocks 5HT3 receptors in the body. Zofra works by stopping the signals that cause nausea and vomiting, which are triggered by chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or surgery. Zofra affects both the central and peripheral nervous systems, but the exact way Zofra works is not fully understood.

Dosage & Administration

Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting: For adults and children over 6 months: Take 8 mg, three times at 0.15 mg/kg (max 16 mg) or as prescribed by the doctor. Injection form: 0.15 mg/kg, max 16 mg, injected over 15 minutes.

Radiotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting: For adults: Take 8 mg, 1-2 hours before radiotherapy, then 8 mg every 8 hours for up to 5 days after treatment.

Post-surgery nausea and vomiting: For adults: 16 mg, taken as two 8 mg tablets. Injection: 4 mg. For children over 40 kg: 4 mg injection.

Interaction

Zofra does not affect the liver’s drug-metabolizing enzymes but can be affected by drugs that do. No dosage changes are needed for people using such drugs.

Contraindications

Zofra should not be used by people who are allergic to the drug or any of its ingredients. Zofra should also not be used with apomorphine.

Side Effects

Common side effects include headache, constipation, and diarrhea. Rare side effects include flushing, hiccups, liver problems, and an allergic reaction. Some rare but serious side effects are difficulty breathing and chest pain.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Zofra has not shown any harmful effects in pregnancy studies with animals. However, there are no well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Zofra can pass into breast milk, so caution is needed when nursing.

Precautions & Warnings

Zofra should be used carefully in people who have had allergic reactions to similar drugs. Zofra should not be used to replace a nasogastric tube for stomach suction. Using Zofra after abdominal surgery or chemotherapy might hide other stomach issues.
