Indications

Zolibac is used to treat serious infections caused by bacteria in the following areas: lungs, urinary system, skin, gall bladder, bones, joints, genital organs, blood, heart lining, and during surgery to prevent infections.

Pharmacology

Zolibac is a first-generation broad-spectrum antibiotic that works by interfering with the bacteria’s cell wall, weakening Zolibac and causing the cell to burst.

Dosage & Administration

Adult Dose:

For moderate to severe infections: 500 mg to 1 gm every 6 to 8 hours.

For mild infections: 250 mg to 500 mg every 8 hours.

For urinary tract infections: 1 gm every 12 hours.

For pneumonia: 500 mg every 12 hours.

For severe infections like Endocarditis or Septicemia: 1 gm to 1.5 gm every 6 hours.

For preventing infections after surgery: 1 gm IM or IV given 30 minutes to 1 hour before surgery, then 500 mg to 1 gm IM or IV during surgery, and every 6 to 8 hours for 24 hours after surgery. For high-risk surgeries, Zolibac may continue for 3 to 5 days.

Interaction

If used with Probenecid, Zolibac may increase the level of Cefazolin in the blood, leading to longer effects.

Contraindications

Zolibac should not be used by people who are allergic to Cephalosporin antibiotics.

Side Effects

Common side effects include pain at the injection site, diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, loss of appetite, rash, itching, heartburn, gas, confusion, weakness, low blood pressure, drowsiness, headache, and allergic reactions.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Zolibac is considered safe during pregnancy (Category B). Zolibac is found in very low amounts in breast milk, but caution is advised when giving Zolibac to nursing mothers.

Precautions & Warnings

Zolibac should be used carefully in people with a history of stomach problems like Colitis. High doses may cause seizures in patients with kidney problems.

Storage Conditions

Store at room temperature for up to 24 hours or in the fridge (5°C) for up to 10 days. The color may range from pale yellow to yellow, but Zolibac does not affect its strength.
