Indications

Zostin is used to treat high cholesterol in people who have not responded well to diet and other treatments. Zostin is also used for heart disease and high cholesterol levels in the blood.

Pharmacology

Zostin is a medicine that lowers cholesterol. Zostin works by blocking a substance in the liver that makes cholesterol. This increases the number of receptors on liver cells to remove more bad cholesterol (LDL) from the blood. Zostin also reduces very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol and decreases LDL formed from VLDL. Zostin works mainly in the liver, which is where Zostin is processed.

Dosage & Administration

Adults: The usual starting dose is 10 mg per day, taken as a single dose in the evening. The dose can be increased gradually to a maximum of 40 mg per day. If cholesterol levels drop too low, the dose may be reduced. In patients with heart disease and high cholesterol, the starting dose is 20 mg per day.

Renal insufficiency: No dose adjustment is needed.

Children & Adolescents: Safety and effectiveness have not been established.

Interaction

Zostin does not affect other drugs much. However, when taken with Digoxin, a small increase in Digoxin levels may occur. Zostin may also slightly increase the effect of Warfarin (a blood thinner). In clinical studies, Zostin was taken with ACE inhibitors, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, diuretics, and NSAIDs without major issues.

Contraindications

Zostin is contraindicated in people with active liver disease, pregnant or breastfeeding women, women who could get pregnant unless they use birth control, people who are allergic to any of the ingredients, and people with a genetic condition causing a lack of LDL receptors.

Side Effects

Zostin is usually well tolerated, but some people may experience headache, fatigue, trouble sleeping, upset stomach, constipation, diarrhea, gas, stomach cramps, or muscle aches. Rarely, severe muscle problems can occur, leading to kidney failure. Other side effects like liver problems, pancreatitis, rashes, or swelling have been reported.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Zostin is not recommended during pregnancy as Zostin may harm the baby. Zostin is also not recommended during breastfeeding.

Precautions & Warnings

People with a history of liver disease or who drink large amounts of alcohol should be cautious. Liver function tests should be done before and during treatment. If liver enzyme levels are too high, treatment should be stopped. Women should avoid pregnancy during treatment and for one month after.

Overdose Effects

There is no specific information about overdose. General treatment should be applied, and liver function should be monitored.

Therapeutic Class

Statins, used for lowering cholesterol and improving heart health.
