Indications

Zostiva is used to treat and prevent infections caused by the herpes virus, including shingles, eye infections, genital herpes, and cold sores. Zostiva is also used to help prevent cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections after organ transplants.

Pharmacology

Zostiva is an antiviral drug that works by slowing down the growth of the herpes virus, allowing the body to fight off the infection. Zostiva helps reduce the symptoms of herpes infections and shortens their duration.

Dosage & Administration

Shingles: Take 1000mg (1 tablet) three times a day for 7 days, starting as soon as possible after the rash appears.

Immunocompromised Adults: Take 1000mg (1 tablet) three times a day for at least 7 days, and for 2 days after the lesions crust over.

Genital Herpes (First Episode): Take 500mg (1 tablet) twice a day for 3 to 5 days, starting as soon as symptoms appear.

Cold Sores: Take 2000mg (2 tablets) twice a day for 1 day, with the second dose taken about 12 hours after the first dose.

Prevention of CMV Infection: Take 2000mg (2 tablets) four times a day, starting as early as possible after organ transplant. The duration is usually 90 days.

Interaction

Zostiva should be used with caution when taken with other drugs that affect the kidneys, such as aminoglycosides, methotrexate, or foscarnet. Some medications, like cimetidine and probenecid, can increase the amount of acyclovir (the active ingredient) in the body, which may increase the risk of side effects.

Contraindications

Zostiva should not be used in people with a known allergy to any of its ingredients. Zostiva should be used cautiously in patients with kidney problems or those taking medications that may harm the kidneys.

Side Effects

Common side effects include headache, nausea, stomach pain, and dizziness. Rare side effects may include kidney problems, skin rashes, and confusion. Seek medical attention if you experience any unusual symptoms.
