Indications

Zoventa DS is used to treat mild-to-moderate infections caused by bacteria that are sensitive to the medication. These include conditions like:

  • Acute bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae (including β-lactamase producing strains), Moraxella catarrhalis (including β-lactamase producing strains), or Streptococcus pneumoniae (only penicillin-susceptible strains).
  • Acute bacterial middle ear infection (otitis media) caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, or Streptococcus pyogenes.
  • Pharyngitis (sore throat) and tonsillitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes.

Pharmacology

Zoventa DS is a semi-synthetic antibiotic from the Cephalosporin group, taken orally. Zoventa DS works by attaching to important proteins in the bacterial cell wall, stopping the bacteria from making their cell walls and causing them to die.

Dosage & Administration

For Otitis Media (Middle Ear Infection):

  • Adults: 400 mg every 24 hours for 10 days
  • Pediatric (over 6 months): 9 mg/kg/day (maximum 400 mg) every 24 hours for 10 days

For Tonsillitis/Pharyngitis (Sore Throat):

  • Adults: 400 mg every 24 hours for 10 days
  • Pediatric (over 6 months): 9 mg/kg/day (maximum 400 mg) every 24 hours for 10 days

For Bronchitis:

  • Adults: 400 mg every 24 hours for 10 days
  • Pediatric (over 12 years): 400 mg every 24 hours for 10 days

For Cystitis (Urinary Tract Infection):

  • Adults: 400 mg every 24 hours for 7 days
  • Pediatric (over 12 years): 400 mg every 24 hours for 7 days

For Pneumonia:

  • Adults: 200 mg every 12 hours for 7 to 14 days
  • Pediatric (over 12 years): 200 mg every 12 hours for 7 to 14 days

For Sinusitis:

  • Adults: 400 mg every 24 hours for 10 to 14 days
  • Pediatric (over 12 years): 400 mg every 24 hours for 10 to 14 days

For Urinary Tract Infection:

  • Adults: 400 mg every 24 hours for 10 days
  • Pediatric (over 6 months): 9 mg/kg/day (maximum 400 mg) every 24 hours for 10 days

Interaction

Taking Theophylline or Antacids with Zoventa DS does not affect how Zoventa DS works. However, Ranitidine increases the levels of the medication in the body.

Contraindications

Zoventa DS should not be used in people who are allergic to cephalosporin antibiotics.

Side Effects

Possible side effects include nausea, headache, diarrhea, upset stomach, dizziness, abdominal pain, and vomiting.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Zoventa DS is classified as a Category B drug during pregnancy. There are no well-controlled studies on its use in pregnant women. Zoventa DS should only be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. Zoventa DS is unknown if Zoventa DS passes into breast milk, so Zoventa DS should be used with caution in nursing women.

Precautions & Warnings

Long-term use may lead to resistant bacteria. The dose may need to be adjusted for patients with kidney problems. Caution should be taken when prescribing Zoventa DS to people with a history of gastrointestinal issues, especially colitis.

Storage Conditions
