Indications

Zukaria 5 is used to treat schizophrenia in adults, bipolar I disorder, and acute manic or mixed episodes in both adults and children aged 10 to 17 years. Zukaria 5 is also used as an additional treatment with lithium or valproate in adults and as a long-term treatment for schizophrenia in adults.

Pharmacology

The exact way Zukaria 5 works for schizophrenia and bipolar I disorder is not fully understood. Zukaria 5 is believed that its effectiveness may be due to its ability to block certain brain receptors, including D2 and 5-HT 2A receptors.

Dosage & Administration

Schizophrenia (Adults): Start with 5 mg under the tongue twice a day. The recommended dose is 5 mg twice a day, with a maximum of 10 mg twice a day.

Maintenance Treatment for Schizophrenia (Adults): Start with 5 mg twice a day. The recommended dose is 5-10 mg twice a day, with a maximum of 10 mg twice a day.

Bipolar Mania (Adults, Acute and Maintenance Monotherapy): Start with 5-10 mg under the tongue twice a day. The recommended dose is 5-10 mg twice a day, with a maximum of 10 mg twice a day.

Bipolar Mania in Children (Aged 10-17 years): Start with 2.5 mg under the tongue twice a day. The recommended dose is 2.5-10 mg twice a day, with a maximum of 10 mg twice a day.

Bipolar Mania (Adults, With Lithium or Valproate): Start with 5 mg under the tongue twice a day. The recommended dose is 5-10 mg twice a day, with a maximum of 10 mg twice a day.

Sublingual tablets should not be swallowed. Place the tablet under the tongue and allow Zukaria 5 to dissolve completely. Do not eat or drink for 10 minutes after taking the tablet.

Interaction

Zukaria 5 should be used cautiously with antihypertensive drugs, as Zukaria 5 may lower blood pressure. Zukaria 5 should also be used with care if taken with Paroxetine, as Zukaria 5 affects the same liver enzyme (CYP2D6).

Contraindications

Zukaria 5 is not suitable for patients with severe liver problems or those who have had allergic reactions to asenapine, such as swelling, difficulty breathing, or rashes.

Side Effects

The most common side effects are restlessness, drowsiness, numbness in the mouth, dizziness, movement disorders, nausea, increased appetite, tiredness, and weight gain.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Zukaria 5 may cause movement problems or withdrawal symptoms in babies exposed to Zukaria 5 during the last trimester of pregnancy. There is not enough information on whether Zukaria 5 passes into breast milk or affects the baby.

Precautions & Warnings

Special care should be taken when prescribing Zukaria 5 to elderly patients with dementia, as well as those with conditions like heart problems, muscle stiffness, weight changes, low white blood cells, seizures, or cognitive issues.

Overdose Effects

There is no specific antidote for an overdose. Treatment should focus on supportive care, including maintaining proper breathing and oxygen levels. If there are severe movement problems, anticholinergic medications may be needed. Close monitoring is essential until the patient recovers.
